Benefits of Boat Seats
Multifunctional Seat Design
Boat seats are often multipurpose to optimize the way that space is used. Lounge and dinette seating bases are often designed to have stowage space or even a removable cooler inside. Most seats now also have fully integrated cupholders sewn or cut directly into the seatback or armrest, minimizing the need for tables.
Upholstery Updates
Boat upholstery has made great strides. The days of white vinyl cracks (blue at a stretch) are long gone. Waterproof faux leather options have evolved to not only look more realistic, but also to be more durable. The“pinking”problem” with vinyl (discoloration caused by the growth of bacteria in damp environments) has been eliminated. Issues with cracking, fading, drying and scuffing have been minimized with improved or eliminated plasticizers that can degrade in UV light.
Colour Trends
There are two key colour trends which boaters lean towards. On larger yachts, a neutral palette and‘greige' (grey and beige combinations) is an extremely popular choice. Accents are added with pillows or throws that provide pops of color. Sport boat and express cruisers lean towards bold expressions with bright colors and contrasting stitching. It's not unusual to see orange paired with grey, and white accented with either lime green or black. The sport and tow segments exude a vibrant energy and statement seating.
Movability Is Flexibility
Furniture on boats used to be fixed and inflexible. Tabbed into the bulkheads, settees, helm seats and companion lounges. However, free-standing furniture is now expected, especially on yachts, where they can be moved indoors or outdoors providing greater personalization and utility. Dining tables can be shifted around on a flybridge, one example is the Prestige X70. If you want your own dance floor or more than one seat at the table, it's an easy fix. In turn, this makes a vessel for evergreen. For rough passages furniture is secured for safety reasons, however larger boats spend approximately 80% of their time at anchor or in a slip.
3 Things to Consider When Upgrading Your Boat Seats
Boat seat style
Has the color of your seats started to fade and crack? Is the style outdated? When looking at your current boat seats, it's important to note if the color isn't matching the rest of the interior. The style continuity of your boat can affect the resale value.
Boat seat durability
Poorly made boat seats aren't able to withstand freshwater and saltwater so they tend to get black mildew spots even if you clean them after every outing. Not only will they get spotty but they also might start fraying at the seams because of other harsh weather conditions such as wind.Buying a boat seat that is durable and can withstand harsh weather conditions as well as freshwater and saltwater is important if you don't want to buy new seats every year. Look for the words, “Marine Grade Vinyl” when shopping. These seats are more durable, easy to clean, and mildew resistant. Since boaters spend hours on the water with the sun pounding down on their equipment, finding a boat seat that is protected from those harsh rays is critical.
Boat seat comfort
If you can't go a whole day on the boat without your back aching, it's probably time to upgrade those boat seats. The last, but most important thing to look for in a boat seat is the comfort factor. A lot of people tend to overlook this part and sacrifice comfort for price. But is it worth it?Boaters and anglers are prone to back pain because they sit for prolonged periods of time. While many anglers tend to just deal with the pain, it's important to note that poor posture can lead to chronic back pain. If you're already suffering from chronic back pain, spend the few extra dollars to get a seat that provides comfort and back support.

Vinyl
A popular choice for its waterproof and UV-resistant properties. Vinyl seats are easy to clean and maintain but may not be as breathable as other materials.
Fabric
For a more comfortable and breathable option, some seats use marine-grade fabric that is water-repellent and resistant to mold and mildew.
Polyethylene
Used for the framing and base of seats, polyethylene is a strong, lightweight, and weather-resistant material.
How to Choose Boat Seats
Comfort and Support
One of the essential factors when selecting boat seats is ensuring they provide comfort and support for you and your passengers. Consider the seat's cushioning, backrest angle, and overall design. Seats that offer contoured and ergonomic design with high-quality foam padding can help improve comfort during long hours on the water.
Durability and Longevity
Another crucial aspect to consider is the durability and longevity of boat seats. Boat seats need to withstand challenging weather conditions, wear and tear, and frequent use. Opt for seats that are made from high-quality materials, such as marine-grade vinyl or heavy-duty polyester fabric, which are resistant to UV rays, mildew, and water damage 1. Additionally, check the stitching quality and frame construction for better durability.
Weight and Stability
When choosing boat seats, keep in mind the weight and stability factors. It's essential to ensure that the seats don't affect the boat's overall balance and weight distribution. Lightweight seats made of aluminum or plastic frames may be suitable for not adding excessive weight to the boat, but make sure to check if they provide enough stability. Additionally, seats with a secure mounting system will keep occupants safe while maintaining the boat's even weight distribution.
Cost and Budget
Lastly, consider the cost and budget when selecting boat seats. Set a budget beforehand to narrow down your options and avoid overspending. Compare different seat styles, materials, and brands to find the best balance between quality, comfort, durability, and affordability. Keep in mind that investing in high-quality seats may save you money in the long run by minimizing maintenance costs and replacements.
How do you Stop Boat Seats Cracking From Occurring?
Use a boat seat cover
One of the most effective ways to protect your boat seats from the elements is to use a boat seat cover. These covers provide a barrier against UV rays, rain, and other environmental factors. Make sure to choose a cover that fits your seats snugly to maximise protection.
Apply a boat seat protectant
To safeguard your boat seats from water damage and UV rays, consider using a boat seat protectant. Look for a high-quality product designed specifically for marine use. Apply it as per the manufacturer's instructions to create a protective barrier that can prolong the life of your seats.
Clean regularly
Regular cleaning is essential to prevent the buildup of dirt, grime, and mould on your boat seats. Use a mild soap or a boat seat cleaner recommended by the manufacturer to clean the seats. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive brushes that can damage the material.
Store your boat properly
If possible, store your boat in a sheltered area or use a boat cover when it's not in use. Keeping your boat out of direct sunlight and away from extreme temperatures can significantly extend the lifespan of your seats.
Invest in quality seats
When purchasing or replacing boat seats, invest in high-quality, marine-grade seats. These seats are designed to withstand the rigours of boating and are less likely to crack or deteriorate quickly.
Avoid sharp objects
Be cautious about what you bring on board. Sharp objects, like fishing hooks or tools, can easily damage your boat seats if not handled carefully. Implement proper storage and organization to minimise the risk of accidents.
Inspect the Boat Seats
First, inspect the seats thoroughly. This inspection will give you an idea of the job you have ahead of you. You'll be looking for any significant damage to the seats, signs of mildew or mold, and the amount of dirt present on the seats after you bring the boat out of storage for the season. Once you know what cleaning your boat seats will entail, you can move on to the next step, gathering supplies.
Gather Cleaning Supplies
You might be wondering what to use to clean boat seats since the material is different from coverings on the seats in your car and home. You'll want to have the following supplies on hand to ensure you properly clean the seats in your boat:A vacuum or shop vac that's portable and easy to maneuver.A few cloths for both scrubbing and drying.
Vacuum Up Large Particles
Start cleaning your boat seats by vacuuming up any large particles, such as sticks, pine needles, or crumbs from the snacks you enjoyed the last time you took out the boat. You'll also be able to get much of the dust and debris that may have accumulated while the boat was in storage. Try to get in the crevices, underneath the seats, and around the seat edges for the best results. A portable shop vac works well for this job, but you can also use your home vacuum's attachments to accomplish this task.
Wipe Down Vinyl Upholstery
After you've vacuumed up the dust and large particles, you'll be ready to break out your clean cloths. The best way to clean boat upholstery is with either a marine-grade vinyl upholstery cleaner or some water and a little dish soap. Use the cloths to wipe down every visible surface of your boat's seats, looking for damage and Signs Of Mildew And Mold as you go.
Conduct a Thorough Scrubbing
Part of how to clean boat upholstery includes conducting a thorough scrubbing. Bring out your scrub brush or old toothbrush. You'll want to get in all the tiny cracks and cervices that you couldn't reach with the vacuum or cleaning cloths. As you loosen dirt and grime, you may need to go over the seating surfaces with a cloth again to remove any built-up material. When you complete this step, use another clean cloth to dry the seats. Never allow your boat seats to air dry, which can cause cracking in the vinyl.
Apply UV Protection
The last step in the boat seat cleaning process is to apply some UV protection. The seats in your boat are exposed to the elements every time you take it out on the water and sometimes when it's simply sitting in your driveway or storage facility as well. Be sure to apply UV protection material to every exposed surface of the boat seats and that the UV protectant you use is made for boats.
